The first step to learning something new is setting a goal to learn it! Check out our learning goals and how you can practice at home!
Math: In our first unit students will focus on being able to read, write, and identify numbers from billions to ones using number names and base ten numerals in expanded form.
At Home: Play "I am the Greatest" or "Close to 1,000".
"I am the Greatest"
- Each player needs a place value chart.
- Player 1 rolls a dice and places the value on the dice in the chart (I rolled a 4 - I am going to put it in the tens place. The value is 4 tens or 40.
- Player 2 takes a turn and does the same.
- Play continues until charts are filled up. Then compare your numbers. The person with the higher number wins IF they can explain WHY it is larger.
"Close to 1,000" *See image below. This can be played with a dice or cards numbered 0 - 9.
Science/Social Studies (alternated every 4 weeks): In our first science unit, students will see how matter is cycled through ecosystems and how energy glows from the sun to the consumers in a food chain.
At Home: Take a hike or a walk through your neighborhood and discuss the ecosystems surrounding us. What are the biotic (living) factors? What are the abiotic (non-living) factors in this ecosystem? How does each part rely on the other? How does each part get its energy? Energy always starts with the sun!
